The Chantilly Double-Breasted Wool Coat

The long double-breasted coat is the most useful formal thing a man can own, and the Chantilly is a faithful version of it: a woollen cloth, a peaked lapel, two rows of buttons and a length that falls well past the knee. Buttoned, it makes a single clean line from shoulder to hem.

Dark grey is the city choice, over a suit and a white shirt. Black holds the evening. Khaki is the softer, weekend reading — knitwear, denim, boots. In all three the coat does the same thing: it makes everything beneath it look considered.
